Pinstripe-maalarin työ on
Kirjasin
ylös asioita, joita mielestäni maalaustilanteessa tapahtuu ja käsittelen niitä
tässä ja seuraavassa blogitekstissäni.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p><br />
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
Lähtökohta työskentelylle on
yleensä asiakkaan yhteydenotto, jolloin hän kertoo, minkälaisesta työstä on
kysymys.
yhteisymmärrys on syntynyt, antaa tilaaja usein maalarille vapaat kädet
suunnitteluun ja toteutukseen. Tämä kertoo, että tilaajalla on
luottamus maalariin, se kuvastaa yleisemminkin nyky-yhteiskunnalle ominaista arvostavaa
asennetta käsityöläisyyteen.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
odotukset. <o:p></o:p><br />

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
Karkeasti yleistäen maalareita on
kahdenlaisia, toiset tekevät maalauksensa aina omalla tyylillään, kohteesta riippumatta ja heidän jälkensä
on hyvin tunnistettavaa juuri työn tyylin vuoksi.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Ehkä heitä voisi kutsua enemmän
vaikkapa laadukkuudesta. Tällainen
työskentelytapa muistuttaa suunnittelutyölle, esimerkiksi graafiselle
suunnittelulle tai muotoilulle tyypillistä tapaa. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<br />
Kun ensikohtaaminen on tehty,
kustannustaso ja tehtävä sovittu, alkavat käytännön haasteet. Varsinkin
tapahtumissa tällaisista haasteista suurin taitaa olla ajankäyttö, tietylle
kustannustasolle voidaan tehdä tunteja vain tietty määrä.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Se aiheuttaa painetta, koska
ideaalitilanteessa maalaustyössä ei katsota kelloa, vaan annetaan flown viedä
työtä eteenpäin… - niin sanoinko jo...vihaan kelloa!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
Minulle työn kustannuksen ja siihen
käytettävän ajan suhde on joskus vaikeaa määritellä, koska olen mielessäni
rakentanut hintatason, jonka arvoista työni on.
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
Työn laadun ja kustannuksen lisäksi
työskentelyä leimaa usein riittämättömyyden tunne, itsekritiikki on usein
sillä kokonaisuus on usein pienestä virheestä huolimatta hyvinkin kelvollinen.
Myös asiakkailta tuleva palaute on usein salliva, ”käsityön tulee näkyä”, on
yleinen kommentti.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
Joskus virheet johtuvat muusta kuin
maalaustekniikasta tai tekijästä. Syynä voivat olla materiaalit, maalin
koostumus, siveltimen väärä malli tai jopa ulkoiset olosuhteet, kuten tuuli,
vesisade, liian kylmä tai kuuma ilma. Toki tekijässäkin on usein vikaa,

Kulkuneuvorakentajien
erityinen luonteenpiirre on rakenne- ja ulkonäköratkaisujen loppumaton
märehtiminen, vaihtoehtojen etsiminen ja vertailu, erityisesti ajatustasolla. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Se saattaa olla perua ajoilta, jolloin
ihmisillä ei ollut samanlaista kiireaikataulua kuin nykyään. Pohdiskellessa

Yksityiskohdat hieron
kuntoon maalausvaiheessa, silloin saatan viettää paljonkin aikaa sellaisen
asian kanssa, mikä ulkopuolisesta näyttää jo ”ihan hyvältä”. Toisaalta olen

On hämmästyttävää, kuinka pitkään
ajoneuvojen omistajat jaksavat seurata vierestä maalaustyötä! Usein pitkä,
kahdeksan tai jopa kymmenen tunnin työ seurataan alusta loppuun saakka. He
Huomaan usein,
että oma olemassaoloni häviää tilanteesta, keskustelijat eivät näytä
noteeraavan, että kuulen kaiken mitä he puhuvat. Itse saatan joskus puhua
kuulumiset. Omaa osaamistani ja työtä koskeviin kysymyksiin olen kehittänyt
melko standardinomaiset vastaukset, joilla selviän tilanteista nopeasti.<br />
<br />
Huomaan usein, että työn tilaaja saa sivustakatsojien läsnäollessa jonkinlaisen
asiantuntijan roolin. Ohikulkijat voivat olla täysin tietämättömiä mitä
maalaustilanteessa tapahtuu, mutta he jäävät katsomaan erikoista tapahtumaa. Asiantuntijan
rooli syntyy, kun tilaaja kertoo ohikulkijalle maalaamistoimenpiteestä, mitä on
sovittu tehtäväksi ja minkälaisia työkaluja maalarilla on käytössä.</div>

maalaamassa hänen kulkuneuvoaan. Tällöin saattaa syntyä vertailutilanne <span style="text-align: center;">tilaajan ja ohikulkijan kokemuksista. Joskus taas ohikulkija tunnistaa maalarin

Getting to know the world of a pinstriper</h2>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">The work of a pinstriper is same time independent and strongly
linked to the client. It's technical, but emotion and flow also play a big part
in success. I have written down what I think is happening in the painting process
and discuss them here and in my next blog posts.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">The starting point for working is usually the contact of the client,
telling what kind of artwork he is looking for. At this stage, the painter's
experience and skill of interpretation are important, the wishes and tips of
the client must be understood and answered correctly. Once a consensus has been
reached, the client often gives the painter a free hand in terms of design and
execution. This indicates that the client has confidence in the painter, more
generally reflecting the appreciative attitude toward handicrafts, so
characteristic for the modern society.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">The client is happy to give the responsibility of carrying out the task
for the craftsman and he is proud that it is this particular person who
accomplishes it. In a way the client acquires the skill of the craftsman for a
moment and the object for which the handicraft is made remains evidence or even
a trophy of this. Craftsman work produces concrete, tangible, and analogue
products, unlike virtual products in a computer environment. For the craftsman,
the situation gives freedom to create, but also the responsibility to ensure
that the result is worthy of appreciation. Once the client has given an idea or
theme that inspires him, the painter must know what it is all about and he must
be able to respond to the wishes or even exceed the<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>expectations.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><br /></span><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">The quality of work, flow and the self-criticism of a painter</span></h3>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Roughly generalized, there are two types of painters, others paint in
their own style and their imprint is very recognizable because of their style.
Perhaps they could be called more as artists, because the client approaches the
painter precisely because he likes artist’s style. Some painters, on the other
hand, are more customer-oriented and tailor their work to fit the style of the
object, the most recognizable quality is then the high quality of the
workmanship. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This kind of working
resembles that of design work, such as graphic design or product design.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Once the first encounter has been made, the cost level and the task
agreed, practical challenges begin. Particularly in outdoor or indoor shows,
the one of great challenges is to use of the time, only a certain number of
hours can be spent on a given cost level. It puts pressure, because in an ideal
situation painting does not look at the clock, but more like let the flow
command it, therefore I hate the clock!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">the ratio of labor cost and time spent is sometimes difficult to define,
because I built up the price level in my mind, which is also the value of my
work. Since I have a certain appreciation in the branch, I have to reflect on
the relationship between the normal hourly rate of work and prestige of the
result. I often come across the comment "not a bad price at all",
that is, the subscriber's price expectation has been higher than the cost I
have stated.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">In addition to the quality and cost of the job, the job is often
characterized by a feeling of inadequacy, self-criticism is often very harsh,
and even the smallest little flaws gain a huge weight in my mind. When a flaw
occurs through your own brush, it also becomes disproportionate to the size of
the final job. The best thing to do is to take a little distance to the
situation and look at the work from the outside, as a whole. Experience has
taught that it is better to take a breath and not do Quick Repair, as the whole
job is actually valid despite a small flaw. Feedback from customers is also
often permissive, "handicraft should be visible," is a general
comment.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Sometimes errors are due to something other than a painting technique or
the painter. This may be due to paint composition, wrong choice of brush or
even external conditions such as wind, rain, too cold or hot air. Of course,
the problem may lay in the painter, the working position may have evolved to
somewhat awkward and therefore the hand is not positioned in the best possible
way. Understanding this, and especially finding a correction, is a big part of
painting.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Many vehicle builders enjoy being immersed in the details of the task. A typical
feature of vehicle builders seems to be the endless reassessment of solutions
regarding technical design and appearance. The search for alternatives and the
comparison at the level of thought is endless. It may have something to do with
the old times when people did not have the same rush schedule as they do today,
but it also gave an impression of a prudent expert.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I tend to start from the whole.
If it works, I'm ready to move forward right away. I will finish up the details
while I’m working, I may spend a lot of time with something that for the
outsider looks fine. On the other hand, I also often made the groundwork in
advance, or the subject is otherwise familiar to me. Here, the differences
between artistry and technical design may be found, some of us start with the
whole and then go on with the details. Others start from the details and go on
to the whole. In painting, people first see the whole, that is, color and
shape, before they go into detail.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">It is amazing how long vehicle owners can follow the process of painting,
sometimes eight or even ten hours, from start to finish. They may sometimes
make coffee, get some food, or talk to other people hanging around. I often
hear their life stories or stories that other visitors exchange with the car
owner. Often, I find that my very existence disappears, the talkers don't seem
to quote that I hear everything they talk about. On the other hand, I might
talk a lot with them, but most often concentrate on the work, so that I'm
pretty quiet. Often accompanied by music, it fills the space to avoid embarrassing
quiet moments.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">These sessions often will meet old friends, with whom you should at
least greet and ask for the latest news. For the questions regarding my own
work I have developed a fairly standard routine answers, which will take care
this situation quickly. I often find that the vehicle owner gets some kind of
expert role in the presence of bystanders. Passers-by may be completely unaware
of what is happening in the painting session, but they are left to watch an
unfamiliar event. The role of an expert is created when the car owner tells the
passer-by about the painting procedure, what is the agreed task and what kind
of tools the painter uses.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Sometimes passers-by may have first-hand experience in painting, even
so, that I have been painting his vehicle. This may result in a comparison
between the experiences of the client and the passerby. Sometimes a passerby
recognizes a painter and praises his work, he may wonder how long he has done
the painting job and how many meters of stripes have been painted in his
lifetime. Sometimes passers-by move in groups, making it easy to shout comments
about the painting event. Most of the time, the comment suggests that you can't
do such a detailed job in a hangover.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">The theatricality of the painting session is emphasized by a toolbox, an
old stool covered with paint splashes that serves as a paint mixing table, and
a stage formed by the vehicle to be painted and the artist.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Kustomkulttuurin ja kustomoinnin eroa on usein aika vaikeaa
selittää. Perinteiseen tyyliin tapahtuva ajoneuvojen rakentaminen, oli kyseessä
hot rod-auto tai kustomauto tai moottoripyörä, kuvataan osaksi kustomkulttuuria
sen kummemmin ihmettelemättä. Noudattavathan ne useimmiten perinteisiä malleja
ja niiden rakentajat ovat alan tekijöitä. Danin kommenttiin perustuen olen

without hesitation. After all, they often follow traditional styles and are
built by the enthusiasts. My idea, based on Dan's comment, is that they are not
part of kustom kulture, but rather part of kustomizing. They will only become kustom
kulture when a collector enters to the scene and the vehicle becomes a

cars or hot rods built and presented decades ago, and perhaps forgotten, will
get a new glamour when they are rediscovered as a barn find or similar. After
being restored or preserved, these vehicles are often auctioned off and will
get a high monetary value in addition to their historical value. The buyers are
mostly collectors, who can of course use them as drivers, but often they ended

Kustomkulttuurin esinevalikoima
voidaan jakaa karkeasti kahteen suurempaan osa-alueeseen. Perinteisesti kustomointi
kohdistuu autoihin ja moottoripyöriin. Niiden piirissä on toki tyylien

Perinteisen käsityön esine on usein
Jossain vaiheessa käsin tehty esine on ehkä

Tämänkaltainen kehitys on
jälkimodernille ajallemme tyypillistä, emme tarvitse enää pitkää perinteen
jatkumoa, jotta pääsisimme mukaan käsityön taitajaksi. Riittää että olemme
kiinnostuneita jostain kustomkulttuurin alueesta ja voimme panostaa siihen

supports the spread of the craft, people meet like-minded people and get

This type of development is typical of our post-modern era, and we no longer

but something like a pretension. It can come from strength and training, but it
may not involve that little difference. It takes holistic understanding of the
relationship and harmony between things. Harmony should not be understood as

Sure, performance and edge can have a lot to do with each

power and performance are changes that happen at the same level. In my opinion,
however, moving on one level is not enough yet, something different is required

of the person. In hot rods or customs, it is not always money to get a super

Finding an edge requires thinking and maybe even a bit
of talent. However, talent is rarely something that can actually be obtained as
a birth gift. A talented person is persistent and has the motivation to learn

enthusiasm for exploration. Another important edge builder is the sense of

Olen käynyt Yokohamassa ensimmäisen kerran vuonna 2004, sen
jälkeen kansainvälistyminen on ollut hurjaa. Perinteisesti hot rod -maailmassa japanilaiset
harrastajat katsovat lähinnä itään, eli Eteläiseen Kaliforniaan. Eurooppalaisten

Thrashboy
Japanilainen Makoto Kobayashi on tunnettu kustom-maalari

perinteinen alue, Kalifornia, nousee tietysti tärkeään asemaan, koska ilman
osuus. Eteläisen Euroopan skene on moottoripyöräpainotteinen ja usein harrastukseen
liittyy vahva tarve korostaa omaa egoa, usein isolla rahalla ostetulla moottoripyörällä.
Tällöin kustomkulttuuriin kuuluva käsityöläisyys ja itse tekeminen ja
omaperäisyys korostuvat.<o:p></o:p></div>

<h3>
Kustomkulttuurin töissä on oltava mukana tekijän sydän</h3>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
oivaltavasta omasta ajattelusta. Ovatko työt sitten taidetta vai eivät, on tulkintakysymys,

Valokuva on
armoton, se paljastaa asioita, joihin omat aivot eivät enää pysty!<o:p></o:p></div>

Yokohamassa on merkillepantavaa korkea laatu, joka koskee
niin ajoneuvoja, taidetta tai myyntitavaraa. Taiteilijat ovat joutuneet

pinstripe-veteraanin Hiro Ishiin eli Wildmanin 30-vuotistaiteilijajuhla, sen kunniaksi
hänellä oli esillä mittava osasto pinstripe-töitä. Wildman on hakenut oppinsa

yhteinen linja omille tuotteille, jotta katsojat saavat kiinni teemasta, jota ollaan
esittelemässä. Jopa teosten esittelypaikalla on merkitystä, sillä ahtailla

and perhaps even new ideas. The artist section was traditionally extensive,
with participants from many European countries, the USA, Malaysia, Thailand and
even China. The Pinstripers had been assembled into their own section and from
Finland I was accompanied by Jussi Alasalmi, Marco Planting and model building superstar
Eero Kumanto who arrived at the Bangkok rod hot rod exhibition where he was as an
invited guest. Renowned custom car designer-artist Janne Kutja stayed with
other international artists in his stand. From Europe, there were also
pinstripe artists from Italy, Estonia and Switzerland.<o:p></o:p><br />

I also did interviews with artists in the field. Coming from
southern Italy, Luigi Morgese makes very skilfully painted objects with a traces
of history in the form of beautiful patina and latin flavor. Christof Kaspar, aka
Trashboy, comes from Switzerland and his work is characterized by a variety of
colorful painted monster sculptures amongst other. Japanese Makoto Kobayashi is
a well-known kustom painter whose Japanese-themed statues and paintings are
among the best in the world. Dan Collins, a multi-talented low brow painter, tattoo
artist and sheetmetal crafter, came from California, USA. He has been involved
in the early twilight of Kustom Kulture and especially in the area where the
culture originated.<o:p></o:p><br />

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We had interesting discussions about the features of kustom kulture,
its history and the nature of the neo craftsmanship or artistry in kustom kulture.
The general perception was that it was difficult to limit kustom kulture to a
particular age group, era or geographic area. The common factor, however,
seemed to be that cars and motorcycles are some kind of impetus, even if the
enthusiast himself does not own one. Through this, the traditional area of
customization, California, will of course play an important role, <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>with its seventy years of hot rod and
customization history, there would be no kustom kulture itself. According to
European painters, the model or the age of the vehicle is not relevant, but the
attitude and the amount of one's own work is. The scene in southern Europe is
motorcycle-oriented and often involves a strong need to emphasize one's ego,
often with a motorcycle bought for big money. In opposite to this, <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>the craftsmanship of the kustom kulture, the building
process and originality are emphasized.<o:p></o:p></div>

<h3>
Your mistakes teaches you</h3>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Kustom kulture artists pieces can be either art or
handicraft, but the most important element is that the artist has his or her
own heart and soul put in to it! It differentiates routine repetition from
insightful self-thinking. Whether the objects can be considered art or not is a
question of interpretation, influenced by viewers own relationship to work. One
idea was that if the work is done in such a way that the method or process of
doing it does not immediately open up to the viewer, we are at the edge of art.
Another idea was that a pinstripe pattern, for example, painted on a hot rod,
is an addition to an existing object and as such it highlights the object
itself, but is not an actual work of art. This leads, of course, to the idea
that a pinstripe will only become art when it is painted on its own, for
example on a canvas and placed on a wall. In my opinion, the purpose of a
pinstripe painted on a vehicle is to support or emphasize the style of the
vehicle, not to compete with it for spectacularity. My own belief is that new
handicraft can become an art when the work has its own original interpretation
and the quality of its work is sufficiently high. But in the end, it is the
viewers who make the interpretation.<o:p></o:p></div>

mistakes in one's own work, whether they can happen, and whether they can be
corrected. Here, too, the common perception was that mistakes are part of the
job, and that without them there is no development; in fact, perhaps the
greatest lessons are learned from mistakes! But of course, there are places
where mistakes just can't happen, like a tattoing... However, detecting own mistakes
requires a little distance to work. One interviewee stated that when working
for the same job for a long time, he or she becomes blind and it is important
to take short breaks, or even take photos of the work and view them through
pictures. A photo is ruthless, it reveals things your brain can't do anymore!</div>

Yokohama is remarkable for its high quality, whether it be
vehicles, art or merchandise. Artists have had to pay a fee for their stand,
which of course doesnt favour beginners. And the organizer is pretty strick to
choose who have access to show at all. This year is the 30th anniversary of the
Japanese pinstripe veteran Hiro Ishi, or Wildman, and in honor of this he had
an extensive selection of pinstripe work on display. Wildman sought his
education from Ed Roth in the US in the 1980s and carries the Roth heritage in
his own style of painting. He is also an working for Mooneyes and is responsible
for their t-shirts and many other graphic designs. It seemed that Wildman would
never stop working! Makoto also mentined briefly tha he has 30 years of
painting behind him this year. Makoto has developed pinstripe painting in a
more Japanese style than Wildman.<o:p></o:p></div>

Friendly competition among artists</h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
There is clear competitive situation in the exhibition,
every craftsman is there to sell his products. So it is important to find some
sort of niché for your own products so that viewers will catch up with your
presenting. It is significant that you plan how you display your pieces,
because in narrow aisles, viewers often gaze down to the tables, objects that
are too high may be overlooked. To get a status of a true celebrity, Shige
Shuganuma, Mooneyes' director, explained that entering the Japanese market
requires a lot of presence and repetition. One such star is Jellybean, an
artist whose extraordinarily skilfully drawn female characters and posters are
so astonishing, that they are instantly recognizable. Rockin' Jellybean is only showing
in a wrestling mask, which adds to the character's exotics. You better queue up
early for autographs, as they are only written at well-defined times!<o:p></o:p><br />

The Japanese seem to be fierce collectors, when the doors
opened at 8am, a wild rush toward the Vans shoe stand began. The organizer has designed
sneakers with their own logo and model, which were only available at the show.
In front of the stand was a queue of more than one hundred meters, which snaked
around the exhibition area, everyone wanted 120 € sneakers! The same thing
happened on Mooneyes' own stand, with memorabilia and shirts made for the
event. Makoto, for his part, makes a small series of Fortune Cat statues every
year, which he has painted with almost superhuman skill. This year, there were
nine of these twenty centimeters tall statues, and the first collectors had
arrived at the door of the exhibition hall around nine o'clock the previous
night. They were given a waiting number with which they could then choose their
own. The € 800 statues were sold out in ten minutes!<o:p></o:p><br />

Custom culture is a polyphonic, colorful and sometimes
difficult to define. The Yokohama exhibition is an event that cannot be
described without adjectives. The vibes of the kustom kulture experience is
felt by all senses, and part of the experience only opens up with delay. A very
big factor is the international community, whose members often share the same
ideas, whether people from the South, North, East or West!<o:p></o:p><br />

”Rat rod” eli” rottarodi” on pysynyt muodissa
hämmästyttävästi koko 2000-luvun. Nimen alkuperästä on erilaisia näkemyksiä,
tarkoitettuja. Väri on usein mattapintainen, koska sellaisen aikaansaaminen
spraymaalilla on helpointa.<o:p></o:p></div>

ulkonäölle on tyypillistä rähjäinen ulkonäkö, viimeistelemättömyys ja ruosteisuus,
se on asenteeltaan agressiivinen ja epäsosiaalinen. Rottarodin lähtökohtana on usein
20 -40 -luvun auto, tosin alkuperäisestä ajoneuvosta on jäljellä usein lähinnä
hahmo. Koria on usein muokattu vahvasti, katon korkeutta on laskettu, sisutus
sisustus repii kolaritilanteessa matkustajat viipaleiksi eikä jalankulkijoilla

Molemmille on yhteistä vahva
nyökyttely oman porukan kesken arvostetaan korkealle.<o:p></o:p><br />

<h3>
<br />Rat Rod and "Lobsider"</h3>
<div class="MsoCommentText">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoCommentText">
The "rat rod" has remained amazingly
fashionable throughout the 2000s. There are different views on the origin of
the name, but a strong guess is that the style refers to the ”rat bike”.
Typical of this is the rough appearance and the various sloppy mechanical
solutions that keep the bike in traffic. Usually this is done by using spare
parts which are not intended for the particular motorcycle brand in question or
for a motorcycle in general. The paint job is often flat, as it is easiest to
achieve with a spray can.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoCommentText">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoCommentText">
Likewise, the appearance of the rat rod is
characterized by its shoddy appearance, rust, aggressive and anti-social
attitude. Rat rod is often based on a 20's-40's car, although the original parts
are mostly replaced on something suitable. The bodywork is often heavily
modified, the roof height has been lowered, the interior is ragged, or is
replaced by shot seats. The engine is not hidden under the
hood, but is prominently displayed and shakes through its open exhaust pipes,
causing at least some confusion on the street. The rat rod also looks quite
unsafe, with its unupholstered interior splitting passengers into slices in
case of accident and pedestrians having no chance of coping with a possible collision,
unlike rounded modern cars.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoCommentText">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoCommentText">
The rat rod has a Finnish counterpart, a drastically
modified vehicle but a newer model, perhaps in the 50's and 70's. Because of
their sideways or rearward -leaning body stance, the cars got the nickname
"Lintta”, meaning roughly same as ”Lobsided”, or at the highest praise ”Beastly
Lobsided”… The point was that the vehicle
was confusing, and its construction was motivated by causing discomfort in the
eyes of average people. There is a strong sense of community in the ”Lintta”, to
get a lot of friends to fit in a spacious, albeit maybe a low car. So a rat rod
as well as Lintta is an attitude car and as such can be compared to rock music,
or perhaps to punk. They both share a strong spirit of self-expression, and no
doubt fun, where criticism from outside is irrelevant. On the other hand,
approving nods among your own crew is highly valued.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoCommentText">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoCommentText">
In Finland, low-cost Lintta’s appeared on cruising
nights already in the early-to-to mid 80s. Custom thinking was reflected in the
fact that the cars had to be low, and this was achieved by cutting the springs
and lowering the roof. The important thing was that the vehicle was kept on the
road, so the beauty related actions were not relevant, quite the contrary. The careful
choice of tires and rims, that most influential of the appearance of the car,
was of secondary importance, it was enough that the wheels were round. Budget
thinking was emphasized by the fact that the car was usually a four-door, at
best a station wagon, and it seems that the 1961-64 Chevrolets were very
popular.</div>
<div class="MsoCommentText">
<br /></div>
<h4>
Flat paint helped to grow the popularity of customizing and getting the vehicles on the road</h4>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoCommentText">
One of the first rat cars in our country was Billy
Laitila’s Packard's 'Junkyard-K', which was completed in the mid-1980s,
ironically known as the scrapyard-kustom. However, the construction of Packard
differs radically from the Lintta-culture in the sense that the builders had a
clear understanding of the proportions, stance and appearance of the classic kustom
car. Not to mention the fact that the builders also chose whitewall tires with kustom
hupcaps. Packard was painted in a flat color, as were many of the subsequent Lintta-rides.
However, flat paint was not necessarily meant to be the final goal, but an
intermediate step towards the final finished surface.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoCommentText">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoCommentText">
Flat paint was not a random choice, as hobbyists with understanding
of history of hot rodding and kustom construction knew that as early as the
40s, builders in the US were driving cars with flat paint. This was usually due
to the fact that the cars were in daily use and the builder proceeded with his
financial resources, the painting was expensive and it was therefore a long
wait. In the 1980s, there were already many enthusiasts in kustom history in
Finland, one of whom was Petri Hälvä, who built the 1962 Pontiac Grand Prix
hardtop in the first half of the 1980s. He deliberately chose a flat rust-reddish
color for his car, thus respecting an old tradition even if the car was completely finished. The choice was bitterly
received by puritanists, but it was strongly thumbed up by kustom car
enthusiasts.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoCommentText">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoCommentText">
Indeed, in the 1980s, the goal of vehicle design was to
produce a finished and "beautiful" car, and at the shows were rarely
seen in flat painted, "unfinished" vehicles. A worn-out original
color may have adorned a vehicle that had been "salvaged", that is, returned
to road after a long standstill, but some sort of unwritten goal was to have it
repainted. The flat paint now made it possible to enjoy driving even though the
vehicle was still unfinished. The whole idea of using unfinished vehicle became
accepted through the flat color. In the 1980s it actually contributed to the
growth of second-generation Finnish car builders and enthuaists into a customized
ride for slightly less money. </div>

vehicles were built with self-taught knowledge and modest garages.<o:p></o:p></div>

Kustom Kulture can be called a postmodern phenomenon, things
that have influenced different circles and at different times are sampled into
a totally new entity.</h3>

<div class="MsoNormal">
The "original" people in the custom culture, who
were youngster in the 50s and 60s, would have figuratively gobbled up punk rockers who would be hanging around in the same meetings with them. Many of the custom culture
phenomena touch very little, if any, on the custom and hot rod vehicles.
Tattoos once belonged to criminals, sailors or strange circus characters.
Pin-Up girls were admired on the pages of men magazines, sometimes even in car
pictures, but burlesque performances did not touch teens except in their wet dreams.
Most of the Tiki-characters were hidden in restaurants that were visited by middle
class adults, but they were almost never seen in vehicles. The music was
rock'n'roll, doowop, or any other old school, no punk brawl!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The movie American Graffiti hit the nostalgia movement big
time in 1973 and was a perfect fit for the 50s trend that was being lived at
the time. Fifties was a big trend, set more or less from the fashion industry.
It faded away just like other trends, though many of those in their youth are
still stuck at that period of style.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
After the mid-1980s, car and motorcycle enthusiasts
(Desperate generation rediscovered the old style, but this time the phenomenon
was not controlled from above but grew within the group. They were born into
that world, perhaps inspired by their parents and basically on the west coast
of the United States, but also, of course, in the North. The original car guys,
inspired by nostalgia, returned to their youth.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Those were the times when monochromatic pastel paintings
were big. To counterbalance modern that trend, genuine 40s, 50s or 60s style
begun to grow again. American Graffiti had been a nostalgic trip to 50s and 60s
adolescence. Now a bit stubbier perhaps, they wanted their custom car back, but
with modern amenities to suit their comfort needs. New enthusiasts, in turn,
wanted to live just like those original ones then. Their attitude toward
vintage was sometimes even more puritanic than that of the original custom or
hot rod -people.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In Finland, flat painted chopped cars began to appear
on cruising evenings, but the enthusiasts outlook were mostly typical of their
time, jeans, cowboy boots and t-shirts. I first encountered the vintage hot rod
phenomenon in England in 1992, mixed with pastel-colored street machines I
found a flock of roadsters and coupes, in worn out paint jobs and flathead engines.
Around them hang hot rodders with greased hairdo’s and 501’s, the atmosphere
was like in an old movie, very refreshing and authentic.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Laguna Beach's 1993 Kustom Kulture exhibition fell well into
neo-nostalgic times. Rat Fink and hot rod art were on the rise, with pinstripers
starting to appear again after years of absence in hot rod shows. In England the
Hemsby rock 'n' roll party gathered a large crowd, including customs, hot rods
and motorcycles. The young generation around the shows dug the interesting vintage
details, but the historical background was no longer so terribly important. Many
colorful books were written about the Tiki culture, Betty Page raised interest
in pin-up culture, and through the US West Coast skate culture, important
brands came along, like Dickies clothing.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
After the mid-1990s, the Internet exploded the flow of
information. Knowledge about US styles and authentic clothing brands or
artists' painting styles began to spread without delay. Events began to emerge
around a custom culture where like-minded people met and shared their ideas
regardeless of the country of their origin. What they often had in common was a
retro style and a cool attitude. We soon discovered that the phenomena unknown
to each other were in perfect harmony. Women took large tattoos, the <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>themes might be familiar Ed Roth, or tiki
characters, and the in-depth message of the tattoos was lost to decorative
meaning of the picture. Hippie-style choppers, vans, VW’s and old-school hot
rods received equal praise, with t-shirts possibly bearing Rat Fink or the
Misfits logo. The scary message of the skull turned into an ornament that even
young children wore.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Custom culture is like sampled music, picking out the best
rhymes from existing songs and fitting them into a new song. The modernistic
movement could be described as continuity, building on traditional knowledge,
and thus developing new things on the basis of history. For the postmodern
world it is typical that nobody cares much about the tradition or history. What
is important, is that the idea is cool enough to be included in his or hers world
of interest. Through this, the attachment to history also disappears and things
like this happens: A trainee came to me as I was drawing flames on t-shirt
graphics, ”hey where did you (old fart) found that shape, you know, it is a
historic heavy rock-theme! Really old, at least from the seventies… Good or
bad? Doesn’t really matter if you just like it!<o:p></o:p></div>

The birth of custom culture and Ed Roth</h4>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The concept of Kustom Kulture was strongly influenced by an
exhibition called "Kustom Kulture" at Laguna Beach's Laguna Art
Museum in 1993. It brought to the limelight custom and youth idols of the 1950s
and 1960s by Ed Roth, Von Dutch, Robert Williams and a few other lowbrow
artists. The curator of the exhibition was Craig Stecyk, a distinguished lowbrow
documentary writer whose articles in Skateboarder magazine raised skaters to a
worldwide fame in the 1970s. The Last Gasp of San Francisco was involved in the
arrangements, it was a major underground magazine publisher and provided a
clear framework for hot rod art as part of the subculture art scene. The
exhibition circulated in a few larger cities and at the same time the concept
of "kustom kulture" spread to a wider group of citizens.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In the early 1990s, digging in the fifties and sixties was
mainly a vigorous activity of fragmented hardcore car and nostalgic circles.
70's nostalgic fifties fashion movement was largely gone. The Internet had not
yet achieved a significant position, so the information flow was slower than it
is today. There were just a few magazines in the kustom industry, although signs
of interest in lowbrow monster and freak figures were visible. Von Dutch and
Roth were pinstripers, so it can be argued with pure conscience that pinstriping
and pinstripers are the starting points for Kustom Kulture.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When introvert Von Dutch liked to retreat from publicity, Ed
Big Daddy Roth understood his own cult value, especially among young people.
Cars and custom building in the US since the late '50s were about as popular as
computer games today. Space age car factories designed vehicles whose
imaginative design was so overwhelming that modern moral and political
correctness would never accept anything so hedonistic. Ed Roth began to commercialize
his own custom cars, Rat Fink -characters, into this soil and raised his vision
by an order of magnitude higher than car companies ever could imagine. And that
suited perfectly for teens!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So the early 1960s was a busy time. Youth culture and late
childhood as marketing targets had only been discovered a few years earlier,
now they were important marketplaces. Music and various crazes from TV shows to
chopper bikes offered endless opportunities to spend the hard earned cash.
Rebellion is built into teenagers, and Roth's unconventional characters or
model kits were a great tool to confuse parents or teachers perceptions of good
behaviour.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Roth's bubbletop show cars were show stoppers, making scale
models with massive sales figures. He commercialized his ideas into t-shirts,
stickers, and various cheap toys or decorations, and as a capable produder,
Roth was able to hire skilled professionals to realize those crazy ideas.
Robert Williams and Ed Newton drew monsters and cars with unprecedented power
and style, most often signed by ”Roth”. On the other hand, the original idea of
customization, to create something unique, was somewhat diluted, as Roth's
custom characters became almost mainstream for a short period of time!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Roth was the father of custom culture not just with his
strange characters and vehicles. Kustom Kulture is characterized by
commercialization and the recycling or customization of ideas, which was also Roth's
path to success. After all, he was a regular star at shows, showing off his
strange cars and painting t-shirts on the spot. A similar show spirit is
typical of today's custom culture artists.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The Laguna Art Museum's Kustom Kulture exhibition thus
featured automotive artists and lowbrow artists. Today, we see a tremendous
range of arts and crafts in the field of Kustom Kulture. Tattoos, vintage
skateboarding, tiki characters, choppers, pin-up dressing, garage punk, patina,
fake patina, jump blues, even burlesque. Much of these would have been left to
their own worth in the early '90s retro-lowbrow flair, they weren't part of the
custom vehicle culture of the' 50s and '60s! Today, in the world of Kustom Kulture,
ladies and gentlemen of the 40’s pass in harmony with the skaters of the 80’s.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
Mahdoton kysymys...?
customautojen maailmassa. Kuka on oikeassa?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
Kustomkulttuuri on ilmiö, jota voi
monella tavalla verrata alakulttuureihin. Sen syntyyn liittyy olennaisena
vuonna 1993 USA:ssa Laguna Art -museossa järjestetty näyttely, jonka nimi oli
Kustom Kulture. Moni vertaa käsitettä Customoinnin kulttuuriin, moni kertoo

Kustomkulttuuri on
sekoitus monia retrohenkisiä asioita ja retro taas merkitsee eri sukupolville
eri asioita. Eli tuskinpa oikeaa vastausta on olemassakaan...<o:p></o:p></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">

Tulen jatkossa pohdiskelemaan
kustomkulttuurin moninaisia ilmiöitä, kerro ihmeessä miten itse koet nämä
asiat!<o:p></o:p></div>

The content of a
Kustom Kulture varies according to who speaks about it. Many see Kustom Kulture
as just one big vintage- old school party, many associate it with familiar
characters like the flying eyeball. Many say that the whole thing is humbug.
Many swear by the significant influence of kustom kulture in the world of hot
rods or customs. Who is right?<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="separator" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
Custom culture is a phenomenon that
can be compared to subcultures in many ways. An essential part of its origins is
an exhibition called Kustom Kulture, organized at the Laguna Art Museum in the
USA in 1993. Many compare the concept to the culture of Customization, many say
he was present when custom culture was born, then in the late '40s or' 50s.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="separator" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
I see custom culture as a fairly new
phenomenon, constantly picking up new elements brought by new people and new
eras. Kustom Kulture is a mixture of many retro-minded things, the word Retro
has different meanings to different generations. So hardly the right answer is
there ...<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="separator" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
But Kustom Kulture, however, has
features that we see same way, no matter in what country you are coming from,
or what objects and things are being handled. Such things include, at least,
skilled craftsmanship, retro, often patina and strong feeling of being same
minded. The common Kulture is also supranational, as the "members"
and artefacts of the custom culture are very much the same whether they come
from the Nordic countries or Japan.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="separator" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
I will be discussing about the many
facets of Kustom Kulture, please feel free to tell your oppinion about these
ideas!<o:p></o:p></div>
