Rottarodi ja Sikalintta - Rat Rod and "Lobsider"

”Rat rod” eli” rottarodi” on pysynyt muodissa hämmästyttävästi koko 2000-luvun. Väri on usein mattapintainen, koska sellaisen aikaansaaminen spraymaalilla on helpointa.

Rottarodin lähtökohtana on usein 20 -40 -luvun auto, tosin alkuperäisestä ajoneuvosta on jäljellä usein lähinnä hahmo.

Rat Rod and "Lobsider"

The "rat rod" has remained amazingly fashionable throughout the 2000s. There are different views on the origin of the name, but a strong guess is that the style refers to the ”rat bike”. Typical of this is the rough appearance and the various sloppy mechanical solutions that keep the bike in traffic. Usually this is done by using spare parts which are not intended for the particular motorcycle brand in question or for a motorcycle in general. The paint job is often flat, as it is easiest to achieve with a spray can.

Likewise, the appearance of the rat rod is characterized by its shoddy appearance, rust, aggressive and anti-social attitude. Rat rod is often based on a 20's-40's car, although the original parts are mostly replaced on something suitable. The bodywork is often heavily modified, the roof height has been lowered, the interior is ragged, or is replaced by shot seats. The engine is not hidden under the hood, but is prominently displayed and shakes through its open exhaust pipes, causing at least some confusion on the street. The rat rod also looks quite unsafe, with its unupholstered interior splitting passengers into slices in case of accident and pedestrians having no chance of coping with a possible collision, unlike rounded modern cars.

The rat rod has a Finnish counterpart, a drastically modified vehicle but a newer model, perhaps in the 50's and 70's. Because of their sideways or rearward -leaning body stance, the cars got the nickname "Lintta”, meaning roughly same as ”Lobsided”, or at the highest praise ”Beastly Lobsided”… The point was that the vehicle was confusing, and its construction was motivated by causing discomfort in the eyes of average people. There is a strong sense of community in the ”Lintta”, to get a lot of friends to fit in a spacious, albeit maybe a low car. So a rat rod as well as Lintta is an attitude car and as such can be compared to rock music, or perhaps to punk. They both share a strong spirit of self-expression, and no doubt fun, where criticism from outside is irrelevant. On the other hand, approving nods among your own crew is highly valued.

In Finland, low-cost Lintta’s appeared on cruising nights already in the early-to-to mid 80s. Custom thinking was reflected in the fact that the cars had to be low, and this was achieved by cutting the springs and lowering the roof. The important thing was that the vehicle was kept on the road, so the beauty related actions were not relevant, quite the contrary. The careful choice of tires and rims, that most influential of the appearance of the car, was of secondary importance, it was enough that the wheels were round. Budget thinking was emphasized by the fact that the car was usually a four-door, at best a station wagon, and it seems that the 1961-64 Chevrolets were very popular.

Flat paint helped to grow the popularity of customizing and getting the vehicles on the road

One of the first rat cars in our country was Billy Laitila’s Packard's 'Junkyard-K', which was completed in the mid-1980s, ironically known as the scrapyard-kustom. However, the construction of Packard differs radically from the Lintta-culture in the sense that the builders had a clear understanding of the proportions, stance and appearance of the classic kustom car. Not to mention the fact that the builders also chose whitewall tires with kustom hupcaps. Packard was painted in a flat color, as were many of the subsequent Lintta-rides. However, flat paint was not necessarily meant to be the final goal, but an intermediate step towards the final finished surface.

Flat paint was not a random choice, as hobbyists with understanding of history of hot rodding and kustom construction knew that as early as the 40s, builders in the US were driving cars with flat paint. This was usually due to the fact that the cars were in daily use and the builder proceeded with his financial resources, the painting was expensive and it was therefore a long wait. In the 1980s, there were already many enthusiasts in kustom history in Finland, one of whom was Petri Hälvä, who built the 1962 Pontiac Grand Prix hardtop in the first half of the 1980s. He deliberately chose a flat rust-reddish color for his car, thus respecting an old tradition even if the car was completely finished. The choice was bitterly received by puritanists, but it was strongly thumbed up by kustom car enthusiasts.

Indeed, in the 1980s, the goal of vehicle design was to produce a finished and "beautiful" car, and at the shows were rarely seen in flat painted, "unfinished" vehicles. A worn-out original color may have adorned a vehicle that had been "salvaged", that is, returned to road after a long standstill, but some sort of unwritten goal was to have it repainted. The flat paint now made it possible to enjoy driving even though the vehicle was still unfinished. The whole idea of using unfinished vehicle became accepted through the flat color. In the 1980s it actually contributed to the growth of second-generation Finnish car builders and enthuaists into a customized ride for slightly less money.

Just as punk was played on an amateur basis, vehicles were built with self-taught knowledge and modest garages.

Kustomkulttuuri on monien erilaisten asioiden sämpläystä - kustom kulture is sampling together things that didn't had much to do with each other

Kustomkulttuuri on jälkimoderni ilmiö, siinä keskenään erilaisista ympyröistä tulleet ja eri aikoina vaikuttaneet asiat sekoittuvat uudeksi kokonaisuudeksi

 Jack Lindqvist tattoo

Nostalgian innostamat alkuperäiset harrastajat taas palasivat takaisin nuoruuteensa.

Desperate generation?  - Elämäntapa näkyy tyylinä. - The way of life shows in the style of life.

Laguna Beachin vuoden 1993 Kustom Kulture – näyttely putosi uusnostalgiseen aikaan hyvin. Rat fink ja hot rod-taide olivat nousussa, pinstripe-maalareita alkoi näkyä taas vuosien poissaolon jälkeen hot rod-näyttelyissä. Vintage rock’n’roll -bileet mm.

- In the kustom kulture scene there's no problem to mix VW:s with Vans. But in the seventies it was impossible to see them in a same meeting.

Kustom Kulture can be called a postmodern phenomenon, things that have influenced different circles and at different times are sampled into a totally new entity.

The "original" people in the custom culture, who were youngster in the 50s and 60s, would have figuratively gobbled up punk rockers who would be hanging around in the same meetings with them. Many of the custom culture phenomena touch very little, if any, on the custom and hot rod vehicles. Tattoos once belonged to criminals, sailors or strange circus characters. Pin-Up girls were admired on the pages of men magazines, sometimes even in car pictures, but burlesque performances did not touch teens except in their wet dreams. Most of the Tiki-characters were hidden in restaurants that were visited by middle class adults, but they were almost never seen in vehicles. The music was rock'n'roll, doowop, or any other old school, no punk brawl!

The movie American Graffiti hit the nostalgia movement big time in 1973 and was a perfect fit for the 50s trend that was being lived at the time. Fifties was a big trend, set more or less from the fashion industry. It faded away just like other trends, though many of those in their youth are still stuck at that period of style.

After the mid-1980s, car and motorcycle enthusiasts (Desperate generation rediscovered the old style, but this time the phenomenon was not controlled from above but grew within the group. They were born into that world, perhaps inspired by their parents and basically on the west coast of the United States, but also, of course, in the North. The original car guys, inspired by nostalgia, returned to their youth.

Those were the times when monochromatic pastel paintings were big. To counterbalance modern that trend, genuine 40s, 50s or 60s style begun to grow again. American Graffiti had been a nostalgic trip to 50s and 60s adolescence. Now a bit stubbier perhaps, they wanted their custom car back, but with modern amenities to suit their comfort needs. New enthusiasts, in turn, wanted to live just like those original ones then. Their attitude toward vintage was sometimes even more puritanic than that of the original custom or hot rod -people.

In Finland, flat painted chopped cars began to appear on cruising evenings, but the enthusiasts outlook were mostly typical of their time, jeans, cowboy boots and t-shirts. I first encountered the vintage hot rod phenomenon in England in 1992, mixed with pastel-colored street machines I found a flock of roadsters and coupes, in worn out paint jobs and flathead engines. Around them hang hot rodders with greased hairdo’s and 501’s, the atmosphere was like in an old movie, very refreshing and authentic.

Laguna Beach's 1993 Kustom Kulture exhibition fell well into neo-nostalgic times. Rat Fink and hot rod art were on the rise, with pinstripers starting to appear again after years of absence in hot rod shows. In England the Hemsby rock 'n' roll party gathered a large crowd, including customs, hot rods and motorcycles. The young generation around the shows dug the interesting vintage details, but the historical background was no longer so terribly important. Many colorful books were written about the Tiki culture, Betty Page raised interest in pin-up culture, and through the US West Coast skate culture, important brands came along, like Dickies clothing.

After the mid-1990s, the Internet exploded the flow of information. Knowledge about US styles and authentic clothing brands or artists' painting styles began to spread without delay. Events began to emerge around a custom culture where like-minded people met and shared their ideas regardeless of the country of their origin. What they often had in common was a retro style and a cool attitude. We soon discovered that the phenomena unknown to each other were in perfect harmony. Women took large tattoos, the  themes might be familiar Ed Roth, or tiki characters, and the in-depth message of the tattoos was lost to decorative meaning of the picture. Hippie-style choppers, vans, VW’s and old-school hot rods received equal praise, with t-shirts possibly bearing Rat Fink or the Misfits logo. The scary message of the skull turned into an ornament that even young children wore.

Custom culture is like sampled music, picking out the best rhymes from existing songs and fitting them into a new song. The modernistic movement could be described as continuity, building on traditional knowledge, and thus developing new things on the basis of history. For the postmodern world it is typical that nobody cares much about the tradition or history. What is important, is that the idea is cool enough to be included in his or hers world of interest. Through this, the attachment to history also disappears and things like this happens: A trainee came to me as I was drawing flames on t-shirt graphics, ”hey where did you (old fart) found that shape, you know, it is a historic heavy rock-theme! Really old, at least from the seventies… Good or bad? Doesn’t really matter if you just like it!
