Pinstraipparin maailmaan tutustumassa - Getting to know the world of a pinstriper

Kiire- flow -työn laatu -itsekritiikki- maalarin moraali

Karkeasti yleistäen maalareita on kahdenlaisia, toiset tekevät maalauksensa aina omalla tyylillään, kohteesta riippumatta ja heidän jälkensä on hyvin tunnistettavaa juuri työn tyylin vuoksi.

Minulle työn kustannuksen ja siihen käytettävän ajan suhde on joskus vaikeaa määritellä, koska olen mielessäni rakentanut hintatason, jonka arvoista työni on.

Pohdiskelun itseisarvo

On hämmästyttävää, kuinka pitkään ajoneuvojen omistajat jaksavat seurata vierestä maalaustyötä!

Getting to know the world of a pinstriper

The work of a pinstriper is same time independent and strongly linked to the client. It's technical, but emotion and flow also play a big part in success. I have written down what I think is happening in the painting process and discuss them here and in my next blog posts.

The starting point for working is usually the contact of the client, telling what kind of artwork he is looking for. At this stage, the painter's experience and skill of interpretation are important, the wishes and tips of the client must be understood and answered correctly. Once a consensus has been reached, the client often gives the painter a free hand in terms of design and execution. This indicates that the client has confidence in the painter, more generally reflecting the appreciative attitude toward handicrafts, so characteristic for the modern society.

The client is happy to give the responsibility of carrying out the task for the craftsman and he is proud that it is this particular person who accomplishes it. In a way the client acquires the skill of the craftsman for a moment and the object for which the handicraft is made remains evidence or even a trophy of this. Craftsman work produces concrete, tangible, and analogue products, unlike virtual products in a computer environment. For the craftsman, the situation gives freedom to create, but also the responsibility to ensure that the result is worthy of appreciation. Once the client has given an idea or theme that inspires him, the painter must know what it is all about and he must be able to respond to the wishes or even exceed the  expectations.

The quality of work, flow and the self-criticism of a painter

Roughly generalized, there are two types of painters, others paint in their own style and their imprint is very recognizable because of their style. Perhaps they could be called more as artists, because the client approaches the painter precisely because he likes artist’s style. Some painters, on the other hand, are more customer-oriented and tailor their work to fit the style of the object, the most recognizable quality is then the high quality of the workmanship.  This kind of working resembles that of design work, such as graphic design or product design.
Once the first encounter has been made, the cost level and the task agreed, practical challenges begin. Particularly in outdoor or indoor shows, the one of great challenges is to use of the time, only a certain number of hours can be spent on a given cost level. It puts pressure, because in an ideal situation painting does not look at the clock, but more like let the flow command it, therefore I hate the clock!

the ratio of labor cost and time spent is sometimes difficult to define, because I built up the price level in my mind, which is also the value of my work. Since I have a certain appreciation in the branch, I have to reflect on the relationship between the normal hourly rate of work and prestige of the result. I often come across the comment "not a bad price at all", that is, the subscriber's price expectation has been higher than the cost I have stated.

In addition to the quality and cost of the job, the job is often characterized by a feeling of inadequacy, self-criticism is often very harsh, and even the smallest little flaws gain a huge weight in my mind. When a flaw occurs through your own brush, it also becomes disproportionate to the size of the final job. The best thing to do is to take a little distance to the situation and look at the work from the outside, as a whole. Experience has taught that it is better to take a breath and not do Quick Repair, as the whole job is actually valid despite a small flaw. Feedback from customers is also often permissive, "handicraft should be visible," is a general comment.

Sometimes errors are due to something other than a painting technique or the painter. This may be due to paint composition, wrong choice of brush or even external conditions such as wind, rain, too cold or hot air. Of course, the problem may lay in the painter, the working position may have evolved to somewhat awkward and therefore the hand is not positioned in the best possible way. Understanding this, and especially finding a correction, is a big part of painting.

The intrinsic value of pondering details

Many vehicle builders enjoy being immersed in the details of the task. A typical feature of vehicle builders seems to be the endless reassessment of solutions regarding technical design and appearance. The search for alternatives and the comparison at the level of thought is endless. It may have something to do with the old times when people did not have the same rush schedule as they do today, but it also gave an impression of a prudent expert.

I tend to start from the whole. If it works, I'm ready to move forward right away. I will finish up the details while I’m working, I may spend a lot of time with something that for the outsider looks fine. On the other hand, I also often made the groundwork in advance, or the subject is otherwise familiar to me. Here, the differences between artistry and technical design may be found, some of us start with the whole and then go on with the details. Others start from the details and go on to the whole. In painting, people first see the whole, that is, color and shape, before they go into detail.

The impact of painting for the vicinity and the role of the bystander

It is amazing how long vehicle owners can follow the process of painting, sometimes eight or even ten hours, from start to finish. They may sometimes make coffee, get some food, or talk to other people hanging around. I often hear their life stories or stories that other visitors exchange with the car owner. Often, I find that my very existence disappears, the talkers don't seem to quote that I hear everything they talk about. On the other hand, I might talk a lot with them, but most often concentrate on the work, so that I'm pretty quiet. Often accompanied by music, it fills the space to avoid embarrassing quiet moments.

These sessions often will meet old friends, with whom you should at least greet and ask for the latest news. For the questions regarding my own work I have developed a fairly standard routine answers, which will take care this situation quickly. I often find that the vehicle owner gets some kind of expert role in the presence of bystanders. Passers-by may be completely unaware of what is happening in the painting session, but they are left to watch an unfamiliar event. The role of an expert is created when the car owner tells the passer-by about the painting procedure, what is the agreed task and what kind of tools the painter uses.

Sometimes passers-by may have first-hand experience in painting, even so, that I have been painting his vehicle. This may result in a comparison between the experiences of the client and the passerby. Sometimes a passerby recognizes a painter and praises his work, he may wonder how long he has done the painting job and how many meters of stripes have been painted in his lifetime. Sometimes passers-by move in groups, making it easy to shout comments about the painting event. Most of the time, the comment suggests that you can't do such a detailed job in a hangover.

The theatricality of the painting session is emphasized by a toolbox, an old stool covered with paint splashes that serves as a paint mixing table, and a stage formed by the vehicle to be painted and the artist.

Synnyttivätkö keräilijät kustomkulttuurin? Did collectors create the kustom kulture?

(Scroll down for English text)

- The Von Dutch pinstriping box was sold in RM Auctions for the staggering price of 310000 USD.

Seuraavana vuonna avattiin kustomkulttuurille nimen antanut ”Kustom Kulture”-näyttely.  Monia Von Dutchin esineitä ja teoksia tuotiin Bruckerin perheen kokoelmista näytille juuri tähän näyttelyyn, muiden tunnettujen hahmojen, kuten Ed Rothin ja Robert Williamsin ohella. Esineet olivat osittain maalauksia, osittain kulkuneuvoja ja niihin liittyviä osia. Kun nuo esineet tuotiin galleriaan, muuttui niiden olemus ja tätä samaa ilmiötä todistamme tämän päivän kustomkulttuuritapahtumissa.  Käyttöesineistä tulee keräilykohteita, eli ne edustivat kustomkulttuuria!

Bruckerin kokoelmasta myytiin vuonna suuri osa Von Dutch – esineistöä vuonna 2006 huutokaupassa, jossa hinnat nousivat hämmästyttävän korkeaksi.

Kustom kulture shown kohokohtia on taidehuutokauppa, jossa hinnat vaihtelevat muutamasta kympistä yli viiteensataan euroon. - The Kustom Kulture Show art auction is the highlight of the shown, prices vary from forty to five hundred euros.

- The borders of Kustom Kulture Art are broadening. Amfiria presented powerful tattoo themes, which had very little to do with traditional hot rod- or custom car building.

- Artist Pasi Tuominen took his little picture frame to Hot Rod Jen for some striping. Colleagues support each other!

Did collectors create a kustom kulture?

In my recent conversation with Dan Collins, an interesting perspective on the emergence of kustom kulture emerged. Dan, who lives in Southern California, the birthplace of kustom kulture, is an artist, tattooist and has built both cars and motorcycles. Dan brought up an interesting perspective on kustom kulture, according to which collectors are responsible for the very existence of kustom kulture.

The difference between kustom kulture and kustomizing is often quite difficult to explain. Often the conventional-style kustom construction, whether it's a hot rod or a kustom or a motorcycle, is portrayed as part of a kustom kulture, without hesitation. After all, they often follow traditional styles and are built by the enthusiasts. My idea, based on Dan's comment, is that they are not part of kustom kulture, but rather part of kustomizing. They will only become kustom kulture when a collector enters to the scene and the vehicle becomes a collector's item.

Von Dutch original Bus was a offered for sale after restoration. Asking price was 6 million Usd.

Kustom cars or hot rods built and presented decades ago, and perhaps forgotten, will get a new glamour when they are rediscovered as a barn find or similar. After being restored or preserved, these vehicles are often auctioned off and will get a high monetary value in addition to their historical value. The buyers are mostly collectors, who can of course use them as drivers, but often they ended up as part of a collection. Vehicle auctioning and collecting is by no means new phenomena, but it is rarely associated with the concept of kustom kulture, however, it does provide a basis for Dan's idea.

An important figure in kustom kulture is Von Dutch, who died in 1992. The following year, an exhibition entitled "Kustom Kulture" was opened. Many of the items and works by Von Dutch were brought from the collections of the Brucker family to this particular exhibition, along with other well-known figures such as Ed Roth and Robert Williams. The objects were partly paintings, partly vehicles and related parts. When those items were brought into the gallery, their nature changed, and we witness the same phenomenon in today's kustom kulture events. Items become collectibles when displayed, that is, they represent the kustom kulture!

Brucker 's collection sold a large part of Von Dutch' s items at an auction in 2006, where prices rose to staggering levels. Not only were the artwworks for sale, but also the tools and other equipment he owned, their high price would prove that Von Dutch as a person was also very interesting, here, at the latest we saw hot kustomizing become kustom kulture.

The Kustom Kulture Show, held in early February in Helsinki, featured a traditional kustom kulture auction. Dozens of different kustom kulture works were sold there, from small paintings to psychedelic sculptures. Kustom kulture auctions are a fairly rare phenomenon in our Finland, but here we have learned to meet the collectors who come to the event specifically to purchase works. Among the works of art was an old work coat of a Finnish pinstriper, the price of which rose to more than three hundred euros, so not only the works but also the artists as persons are rising interest.

French artist Etienne Butterlin presented his art in the Kustom Kulture Show, collectors prefer his style. - Ranskalainen taiteilija Etienne Buttelin esitteli taidettaan Kustom Kulture Showssa, ostajat pitävät hänen tyylistään.

Some collectors start out by collecting works by a particular craftsman or artist, while others focus on a themes, such as a Tiki. There are several well-to-do collectors in Central Europe who are actively enlarging their collections. Many Finnish artisans travelling abroad produce works that appeal to these very collectors. International artists strive to brand themselves so that they present styles which collectors find interesting, and find their way the artists booth, checking out the new stuff. The addition of collectors to the scene has brought rivalry between artists. As a result, the quality of the work has increased and diversified, which is a good thing.

The interest of collectors does have influence of development of the content of the kustom kulture. Perhaps the traditional theme has been formed around cars and bikes, but today we often see objects that have nothing to do with vehicles. What they have in common is mostly comic style, lowbrow or kitchy themes. At the same time, new artisans or artists who have not been interested in the industry before, are introduced to the world of kustom kulture.

Dan Collins has strayed quite far from traditional hot rod art, but his lowbrow/underground -style appeals to kustom kulture people.  - Dan Collins on siirtynyt melko kauas perinteisestä hot rod-taiteesta, mutta siitä huolimatta hänen lowbrow-underground -työnsä vetoavat hyvin kustomkulttuurikansaan.
While many collectors purchase works and objects for straight money, there is strong collecting movement amongst artists themselves. The mutual appreciation of artisan colleagues is achieved by exchanging their own work with other artists, and many artisans are, at the same time,  significant collectors of kustom kulture art.

Kustomkulttuurin uuskäsityöläisyys ja perinteinen käsityö, onko eroa? - The neo-handcrafts of kustom kulture vs. traditional handcrafts, is there a difference?

Motorcycle by Flying Choppers, traditional handicrafts or kustom kulture? Methods of built are more or less traditional, but the design and display definately kustom kulture.

Kustomkulttuurin esinevalikoima voidaan jakaa karkeasti kahteen suurempaan osa-alueeseen.

A customized tool by Doug Dorr. A tool has got a new meaning and message.

Minkä uuskäsityöläisyyden lisän he tuovat perinteiseen käsityöläisyyteen?

Custom built electric guitar by Katar Kustom Kuitars, even the name is customized. Handicrafts at its best, but displayed again in kustom kulture show, gives kustom kulture wibes. Not to mention the wild colors and beautiful details.

A handicrafts factory made bag by Trophy Queen has look of a kustom interior of an automobile.

Kustomkulttuurin käsityöläinen voi tehdä esineitä myös pienimuotoisena sarjatyönä, jolloin hänen asenteessaan on jo liiketoiminnan piirteitä. Tällöin tekijälle on usein muodostunut jonkinlainen tuttu tyyli, josta hänen työnsä tunnistetaan.

Your own house elf can have a totally different look in kustom kulture environment.

Is the neo-handicrafts of kustom kulture different from traditional crafts?

Customized bicycle by Juha Markkula, owner Lasse Vänttinen.

The array of kustom kulture items can be roughly divided into two major areas. The basics of kustomization objects are cars and motorcycles. They have a many style variations, and builders usually have some sort understanding and respect of the customization tradition. Another visually-focused and extensive entity is made up of customized everyday items or tools, as well as painters and sculptors having an artistic intentions to customize their objects. There the traditions are also an important part, so that the work will fit of the context of the kustom kulture. However, the tradition is not quite the same as in traditional handicrafts, the kulture is young and it is constantly changing.

I discussed the essence of handicraft at a seminar held in the autumn of 2019 in the University of Turku. The seminar of Ilmar Talve, founder of the Department of European Ethnology at the university dealt with issues such as: the essence of modern handicraft and, from my own point of view, the neo-handicraft of the kustom kulture.

The customized object embeds it as part of a kustom kulture “tribe”. In kustom kulture, a handicraft product is strongly associated with visual elements, but it may have some practical values as well. So what exactly distinguishes a kustom kulture handicraft from traditional handicraft? After all, a kustom kulture exhibition involves artisans who can create guitars or bags, or build cars and motorcycles, usually in very traditional ways. One may ask whether those outputs are a kustom kulture. What kind of new craftsmanship do they bring to traditional crafts?

Wizman displays his totally twisted artwork

There are no differences in the manufacturing techniques, but the kustom kulture twist comes from different view towards the craft, from the style of the final output and the environment in which object is used. Even the place where the objects are presented gives it a  sense kustom kulture. Not to mention how the handcrafters own attitude leaning towards the kustom kulture has a big significance. When a kustom craftsman presents his work at a "normal" fair, he is probably considered a normal handcrafter with just a different look in his/hers objects.

In traditional craftsmanship the usefulness and beauty are the main goals, as in kustom kulture neo-handicafts, the artisan wants to startle or show that he is different from the mainstream.

Traditional handicrafted item is usually designed to be practical or beautiful, while kustom kulture object prefers to have shock value or at least differ from the normal

Art or kustom kulture cartoon? The unique sculptures of  BR1 Monster are so finely detailed and unique that they can be described as art.

A traditional handicraft item is often practical as it is developed for use, perfected over decades or even centuries of use, take for example an ax, knife or various woven garments. On the other hand, the object may also be some kind of memorabilia or carry a message, such as church objects. Of course, it can also show the pure skill of its maker, like jewelry does. The creators are often experienced, begun as an apprentice and learned to be a master of his craft, take farmers, practice has taught them a wide range of craft skills without any formal training. The methods of manufacturing an object have been refined and the materials have been selected to best suit their purpose. At some point, a hand-made object may have been replaced by a factory-made one, or its purpose may have been neglected. It has become a decorative or ritual object.

Neo-craftsman in kustom kulture

A craftsman in a kustom kulture may be initially trained as a craftsman, but he is often a professional changeover who has realized his dream by making his hobby as the main thing in life. Most of the kustom kulture artisans I know do their work alongside the day job. So the starting point is a hobby and a desire for expression that can grow into a new profession. The community of kustom kulture supports the spread of the craft, people meet like-minded people and get support and positive challenges by comparing with others what they have produced. This type of development is typical of our post-modern era, and we no longer need a long tradition to become a craftsman. It is enough that we are interested in some area of kustom kulture and that we can invest all our energies in it. The tradition is replaced by the limits agreed by the community and its own output.

Kustom kulture craftsman kustomizes our everyday life

A kustom kulture object becomes a part of a kustom kulture “tribe”. A handicraft piece is strongly associated with visual look, but it may also have some practical values. As a rule, a neo-craftsman does not create objects for everyday use, but most often something that expresses, for example, belonging to one's own tribe or appreciation of worksmanship. Objects are often made of recycled items which are customized. Customization is the key word in kustom kulture! The items get a whole new life trough mechanical customizing, or repainting with some lowbrow or underground “message”, or purely kustom kulture symbols like flying eyeballs, flames or pinstripe patterns.

On the other hand, the object may be new and still be part of the kustom kulture. Handmade bags can also be clearly incorporated into a kustom kulture when they are made to resemble, for example, car interiors, both in color and in materials. That is, they refer to something un-common for everyday life, but familiar to someone who has assimilated kustom kulture.

A craftsman in a kustom kulture can also make objects in small-scale serial production, his attitude includes already business-like features. As a result, the creator has often developed a familiar style that identifies his work from the others. This kind of "commercial" approach to kustom kulture is clearly on the rise, especially when the artist or artisan wants to earn more than pocket money.

The object and image world of kustom kulture is therefore based on recycling and rearranging of ideas. It also has an attitude characterized by cartoonish or lowbrow-like roughness and a twist of everyday life. Kitsch is no stranger to kustom kulture either, questioning the good taste and street creditability go hand in hand.

Based on the foregoing, it can be argued that kustom kulture’s neo-handicrafts do not differ that much from the traditional handcrafts, but bring differences in the message the objects and its holder convoy. Showing a message with quality and difference seems like being the most important thing in a kustom kulture: We are not content with the average, there must be style, a slice of vintage and the a proper edge in life!
