Synnyttivätkö keräilijät kustomkulttuurin? Did collectors create the kustom kulture?

(Scroll down for English text)

Seuraavana vuonna avattiin kustomkulttuurille nimen antanut ”Kustom Kulture”-näyttely.  Monia Von Dutchin esineitä ja teoksia tuotiin Bruckerin perheen kokoelmista näytille juuri tähän näyttelyyn, muiden tunnettujen hahmojen, kuten Ed Rothin ja Robert Williamsin ohella. Esineet olivat osittain maalauksia, osittain kulkuneuvoja ja niihin liittyviä osia. Kun nuo esineet tuotiin galleriaan, muuttui niiden olemus ja tätä samaa ilmiötä todistamme tämän päivän kustomkulttuuritapahtumissa.  Käyttöesineistä tulee keräilykohteita, eli ne edustivat kustomkulttuuria!

Bruckerin kokoelmasta myytiin vuonna suuri osa Von Dutch – esineistöä vuonna 2006 huutokaupassa, jossa hinnat nousivat hämmästyttävän korkeaksi.

Kustom kulture shown kohokohtia on taidehuutokauppa, jossa hinnat vaihtelevat muutamasta kympistä yli viiteensataan euroon. - The Kustom Kulture Show art auction is the highlight of the shown, prices vary from forty to five hundred euros.

- The borders of Kustom Kulture Art are broadening. Amfiria presented powerful tattoo themes, which had very little to do with traditional hot rod- or custom car building.

- Artist Pasi Tuominen took his little picture frame to Hot Rod Jen for some striping. Colleagues support each other!

Did collectors create a kustom kulture?

In my recent conversation with Dan Collins, an interesting perspective on the emergence of kustom kulture emerged. Dan, who lives in Southern California, the birthplace of kustom kulture, is an artist, tattooist and has built both cars and motorcycles. Dan brought up an interesting perspective on kustom kulture, according to which collectors are responsible for the very existence of kustom kulture.

The difference between kustom kulture and kustomizing is often quite difficult to explain. Often the conventional-style kustom construction, whether it's a hot rod or a kustom or a motorcycle, is portrayed as part of a kustom kulture, without hesitation. After all, they often follow traditional styles and are built by the enthusiasts. My idea, based on Dan's comment, is that they are not part of kustom kulture, but rather part of kustomizing. They will only become kustom kulture when a collector enters to the scene and the vehicle becomes a collector's item.

Von Dutch original Bus was a offered for sale after restoration. Asking price was 6 million Usd.

Kustom cars or hot rods built and presented decades ago, and perhaps forgotten, will get a new glamour when they are rediscovered as a barn find or similar. After being restored or preserved, these vehicles are often auctioned off and will get a high monetary value in addition to their historical value. The buyers are mostly collectors, who can of course use them as drivers, but often they ended up as part of a collection. Vehicle auctioning and collecting is by no means new phenomena, but it is rarely associated with the concept of kustom kulture, however, it does provide a basis for Dan's idea.

An important figure in kustom kulture is Von Dutch, who died in 1992. The following year, an exhibition entitled "Kustom Kulture" was opened. Many of the items and works by Von Dutch were brought from the collections of the Brucker family to this particular exhibition, along with other well-known figures such as Ed Roth and Robert Williams. The objects were partly paintings, partly vehicles and related parts. When those items were brought into the gallery, their nature changed, and we witness the same phenomenon in today's kustom kulture events. Items become collectibles when displayed, that is, they represent the kustom kulture!

Brucker 's collection sold a large part of Von Dutch' s items at an auction in 2006, where prices rose to staggering levels. Not only were the artwworks for sale, but also the tools and other equipment he owned, their high price would prove that Von Dutch as a person was also very interesting, here, at the latest we saw hot kustomizing become kustom kulture.

The Kustom Kulture Show, held in early February in Helsinki, featured a traditional kustom kulture auction. Dozens of different kustom kulture works were sold there, from small paintings to psychedelic sculptures. Kustom kulture auctions are a fairly rare phenomenon in our Finland, but here we have learned to meet the collectors who come to the event specifically to purchase works. Among the works of art was an old work coat of a Finnish pinstriper, the price of which rose to more than three hundred euros, so not only the works but also the artists as persons are rising interest.

French artist Etienne Butterlin presented his art in the Kustom Kulture Show, collectors prefer his style. - Ranskalainen taiteilija Etienne Buttelin esitteli taidettaan Kustom Kulture Showssa, ostajat pitävät hänen tyylistään.

Some collectors start out by collecting works by a particular craftsman or artist, while others focus on a themes, such as a Tiki. There are several well-to-do collectors in Central Europe who are actively enlarging their collections. Many Finnish artisans travelling abroad produce works that appeal to these very collectors. International artists strive to brand themselves so that they present styles which collectors find interesting, and find their way the artists booth, checking out the new stuff. The addition of collectors to the scene has brought rivalry between artists. As a result, the quality of the work has increased and diversified, which is a good thing.

The interest of collectors does have influence of development of the content of the kustom kulture. Perhaps the traditional theme has been formed around cars and bikes, but today we often see objects that have nothing to do with vehicles. What they have in common is mostly comic style, lowbrow or kitchy themes. At the same time, new artisans or artists who have not been interested in the industry before, are introduced to the world of kustom kulture.

Dan Collins has strayed quite far from traditional hot rod art, but his lowbrow/underground -style appeals to kustom kulture people.  - Dan Collins on siirtynyt melko kauas perinteisestä hot rod-taiteesta, mutta siitä huolimatta hänen lowbrow-underground -työnsä vetoavat hyvin kustomkulttuurikansaan.
While many collectors purchase works and objects for straight money, there is strong collecting movement amongst artists themselves. The mutual appreciation of artisan colleagues is achieved by exchanging their own work with other artists, and many artisans are, at the same time,  significant collectors of kustom kulture art.
