Särmää ja uhoa, tunnetta vai järkeä? - Edge and pretension, emotion or rational sense?

(Scroll down for English text)

Rajusti katosta madallettu custom-auto, mattapintainen väri ja karikatyyriset mittasuhteet. Särmikäs vai uhoava? - Heavely chopped custom car, flat paint surface and caricature proportions. Is this edgy or  pretentious?

- A motor saw is quite edgy tool by itself, but when the features are intentionally blown up, we may enter to area of pretension.  - Pasi Tuominen

 -  When we choos the most un-sexy starting point, like Citroen 2 CV, can have real edge when the owner re-designs the proportions of the car, adds hot rod-style wheels and tires and adjust the stance. This it the nucleum of the EDGE.

- A rattling Finnish-Custom has a style of its own. It contains over-chopped roof, loads of beer cans, un-upholstered interior, rusty chrome details and cheap blackwall tires. In this case the conflict comes from the caricature -like design combined with well considered stance, chrome, wheels and especially the hi-performance moves of the car. Edge or  pretentious... I'd say edge!

Särmän löytäminen vaatii funtsimista ja ehkä jopa vähän lahjakkuuttakin. Lahjakkuus on kuitenkin harvoin jotain sellaista, joka oikeasti saadaan syntymälahjana. Lahjakas ihminen on sinnikäs ja hänellä on motivaatio oppia uusia asioita ja taustoittaa omaa osaamistaan. Lahjakkuus vaatii perehtymistä ja asioiden katsomista monilta eri kulmilta. Sitä voisikin kuvata loppumattomaksi innoksi perehtyä asioihin. Toinen tärkeä särmän rakennustyökalu on tyylitaju.

Edge and pretension, emotion or sense

Epätavallinen lowrider-aihio Lincoln Continental neliovisena, siinä on jotain kiehtovaa. Ehkä särmää...
- An unusual lowrider model, four door Lincoln Continental, there's something very exciting in this combination. Edge maybe...

The recent exhibition in Japan resulted in a considerable amount of mixed thinking associated with the extreme diversity of vehicle building styles. Some of the vehicles impressed with their uniqueness, while some left completely cold, though there were customizations and performance parts to share. This gave rise to a slighty playful reflection that culminates in the distinction between edge and need for appearance, or pretension. I know I will be in trouble because of the vague nature of the question, but what the heck...

As a sort of a garage philosopher, I sometimes find myself running into things that feel like experienced rather than reasonably understood. I am somewhat emotional person and find often myself getting kicks and strange enthusiasm of vehicles, music, or even kustom kulture pieces which is often difficult to rationally comprehend. One such difficult thing to define is the concept of EDGE, which I try to open up and understand a bit. The dictionary describes edges, among others. unpredictable, perhaps in this context it could be described as unexpected and even a bit surprising. On the other hand, most of the things around us has no edge or pretension, and it is just fine. Everyday life is what keeps the world going around!

Abnormal can bring the edge

The outputs and attitudes of kustom kulture often have features that seek something different from the average. Probably because the average is easy to swallow, it doesn't sting or feel too spicy, it's easy to digest. Edge causes shivers, it occurs when the author has the desire to startle and leave a mark, but above all he has a vision. Edge can be found when the familiar solutions are no longer satisfied.

Vanha 60-70 -luvun ruotsalaiscustomista löytyy mehukkaita ristiriitaisuuksia: Ahtimen scooppi customautossa, amerikan lippu, bellflowr-henkiset vanteet mustilla renkailla, flippikeula mutta selkeä 60-luvun alun itärannikon custom-muotoilu. -särmikäs tämäkin sekä harmoninen kaikessa epäjohdonmukaisuudessaan.
 - An old Swedish custom-Chevy has several juicy discrepancies: Supercharger scoop, American Flag painted on the sides, bellflower-style wheels on blackwall tires, flip hood, but clear early sixties east-coast style design. Loads of edge here, but also harmony of the misplaced details!

Straightforward, accustomed choices ("more, further, higher") may give rise to powerful output, but the result is not an edge, but something like a pretension. It can come from strength and training, but it may not involve that little difference. It takes holistic understanding of the relationship and harmony between things. Harmony should not be understood as consistently easy and smooth, but rather as a whole that is balanced in both mild and hot.

Sure, performance and edge can have a lot to do with each other, for example, getting the extreme power generated by an engine requires vision, sensitivity, knowledge, and often unique thinking. However, increasing power and performance are changes that happen at the same level. In my opinion, however, moving on one level is not enough yet, something different is required alongside power. For example, in terms of appearance, a feature that does not follow exactly the accustomed performance-related visual features. Say, instead of completely black (pretentious) paintjob, something bright and playful.

Edge as an experience is more of emotion than sense making

Now, of course, the question comes to my mind, how do you recognize the edge? There is no direct answer to this question because the edge is perhaps more a matter of emotion than rational thinking. The experience it produces is very personal, that is, it varies with the experience and thinking of the person. In hot rods or customs, it is not always money to get a super tuned engine, or high-end rims and tires. It is different combinations and different ways of bringing things together, or just perfect harmony, where the parts and the stance just sit together for once.

- Real patina gives soul and edge to a vehicle, but when it becomes an end itself, it loses the power.

Finding an edge requires thinking and maybe even a bit of talent. However, talent is rarely something that can actually be obtained as a birth gift. A talented person is persistent and has the motivation to learn new things and back up his / her skills. It could be described as an endless enthusiasm for exploration. Another important edge builder is the sense of style. It is not necessarily bought for money, but it is the ability that comes with experience and insight to see small things in one's surroundings which helps to express one's personality.

Rat Fink was a edgy character in the 1960s because it teased the familiar cartoon icon, Mickey Mouse. Ed Roth, the alleged creator of Fink, was also an edgy character, combining the socially-acclaimed Mickey and the disorderly rat together. Something unexpected happened, kids loved it and parents hated it. Roth had clearly understood the nature of both characters and deliberately blended them into a new character.

Familiar or edgy - or familiar and edgy?

Repeating familiar icons is typical of kustom kulture artists and craftsmen of this time. They help artists to place in the family of kustom kulture. Familiar characters and themes are easy to accept, though they may have some very radical or edgy messages in the background, like the one behind Rat Fink. Through familiar characters, we mark ourselves as a group. However, repeating this same set of images does not necessarily lead to edge because too much repetition will dilute the message.

Edge is often found in contemporary art, though it does not always talk to the hot roddar's worldview. A kustom kulture piece can turn into art in the minds of people if it is so finely handmade that it literally dazzles, causing vibration. It is also said that the task of art is to comment on its environment. Commenting will fail unless it causes some sort of distortion, either positive or disgusting. Maybe kustom kulture does not need to comment on its environment, no more than cause aggravation. But it would be great if a kustom-kulture handcrafter would devote himself so deeply in his work, that it would create a twist leading to an edge!

Ristiriitainen lopputulos on täynnä uhoa.
- A customized Mercury is an icon which has some unwritten rules what comes to its building methods and styles. This custom has muscle car features with widened fender flares and painted bumpers, not to mention the highly tuned engine. The conflicting details gives a pretentious  result.

On the other hand, vanilla-flavored, comfortable and familiar solutions are important in our daily lives. If everything was edgy, we would be in a spiral where we would always have to take longer steps to get kicks in our life. Some indication of this is given, for example, by face tattoos or extreme piercings that used to be markings of criminal gangs or circus side shows. Formerly  those visual messages that were considered extreme have now blended into everyday life and normalized. In life, harmony seems to have more significance than it immediately comes to mind, too much is too much and too little is too little ...
