Mitä on kustomkulttuuri - What is Kustom Kulture ?

Mahdoton kysymys...? Kustomkulttuurin sisältö vaihtelee sen mukaan, kuka asiasta puhuu. Moni näkee kustomkulttuurin pelkästään vintage-oldschool-bileinä, moni liittää siihen tuttuja merkkejä, kuten lentävän silmän. Moni sanoo että humpuukia koko homma. Moni vannoo kustomkulttuurin merkittävään vaikutukseen hot rod- tai customautojen maailmassa. Kuka on oikeassa?

Kustomkulttuuri on ilmiö, jota voi monella tavalla verrata alakulttuureihin. Sen syntyyn liittyy olennaisena vuonna 1993 USA:ssa Laguna Art -museossa järjestetty näyttely, jonka nimi oli Kustom Kulture. Moni vertaa käsitettä Customoinnin kulttuuriin, moni kertoo että hän oli paikalla silloin kun kustomkulttuuri syntyi, silloin 40-luvun lopulla tai 50-luvulla.

Minä näen kustomkulttuurin kuitenkin aika uutena ilmiönä, se poimii jatkuvasti sisäänsä uusia elementtejä joita tuovat mukanaan uudet ihmiset ja uudet aikakaudet. Kustomkulttuuri on sekoitus monia retrohenkisiä asioita ja retro taas merkitsee eri sukupolville eri asioita. Eli tuskinpa oikeaa vastausta on olemassakaan...

Mutta kustomkulttuurissa on kuitenkin piirteitä, jotka toistuvat, riippumatta siitä minkälaisessa ympäristössä ollaan liikkeellä, tai mitä esineitä ja asioita ollaan käsittelemässä. Tällaisia asioita ovat ainakin vahva käsityötaito, retro tai vintage, usein patina ja vahva yhteenkuuluvuus. Yhteinen kulttuuri on myös ylikansallinen, sillä kustomkulttuurin "jäsenet" ja tuotokset ovat hyvin pitkälti samannäköisiä tulivatpa ne sitten Pohjoismaista tai Japanista.

Many see Kustom Kulture as just one big vintage- old school party, many associate it with familiar characters like the flying eyeball. Many say that the whole thing is humbug. Many swear by the significant influence of kustom kulture in the world of hot rods or customs. Who is right?

Custom culture is a phenomenon that can be compared to subcultures in many ways. An essential part of its origins is an exhibition called Kustom Kulture, organized at the Laguna Art Museum in the USA in 1993. Many compare the concept to the culture of Customization, many say he was present when custom culture was born, then in the late '40s or' 50s.

I see custom culture as a fairly new phenomenon, constantly picking up new elements brought by new people and new eras. Kustom Kulture is a mixture of many retro-minded things, the word Retro has different meanings to different generations. So hardly the right answer is there ...

But Kustom Kulture, however, has features that we see same way, no matter in what country you are coming from, or what objects and things are being handled. Such things include, at least, skilled craftsmanship, retro, often patina and strong feeling of being same minded. The common Kulture is also supranational, as the "members" and artefacts of the custom culture are very much the same whether they come from the Nordic countries or Japan.
