Kustomkulttuurin synty ja Ed Roth - The birth of Kustom Kulture and Ed Roth

The chopper bicycles were a big thing in since the early sixties. They gave the youth a chance to live the hot rod life in their own scale.

Samanlainen show-henki on tyypillistä tämän päivän kustomkulttuuritaiteilijoille.

Laguna Art Museumin Kustom Kulture -näyttelyssä pääosassa olivat siis autoalan taiteilijat sekä lowbrow-taiteen tekijät. Tänään näemme kustomkulttuurin kentällä hurjasti laajemman kirjon taidetta ja käsityötä. Tatuointeja, vintage skeittausta, tiki-hahmoja, choppereita, pin-up -tyylin pukeutumista, garage punkkia, patinaa, feikkipatinaa, jump bluesia jopa burleskia. Suuri osa näistä olisi silloin 90-luvun alun retro-lowbrow- fiilistelyissä jätetty omaan arvoonsa, ne eivät kuuluneet 50- ja 60-luvun customajoneuvokulttuuriin! Tänään kustomkulttuurin maailmassa kulkevat sulassa sovussa 40-luvun dandyt ja daamit, sekoittuen 80-luvun skeittareihin.

The birth of custom culture and Ed Roth

The concept of Kustom Kulture was strongly influenced by an exhibition called "Kustom Kulture" at Laguna Beach's Laguna Art Museum in 1993. It brought to the limelight custom and youth idols of the 1950s and 1960s by Ed Roth, Von Dutch, Robert Williams and a few other lowbrow artists. The curator of the exhibition was Craig Stecyk, a distinguished lowbrow documentary writer whose articles in Skateboarder magazine raised skaters to a worldwide fame in the 1970s. The Last Gasp of San Francisco was involved in the arrangements, it was a major underground magazine publisher and provided a clear framework for hot rod art as part of the subculture art scene. The exhibition circulated in a few larger cities and at the same time the concept of "kustom kulture" spread to a wider group of citizens.

In the early 1990s, digging in the fifties and sixties was mainly a vigorous activity of fragmented hardcore car and nostalgic circles. 70's nostalgic fifties fashion movement was largely gone. The Internet had not yet achieved a significant position, so the information flow was slower than it is today. There were just a few magazines in the kustom industry, although signs of interest in lowbrow monster and freak figures were visible. Von Dutch and Roth were pinstripers, so it can be argued with pure conscience that pinstriping and pinstripers are the starting points for Kustom Kulture.

When introvert Von Dutch liked to retreat from publicity, Ed Big Daddy Roth understood his own cult value, especially among young people. Cars and custom building in the US since the late '50s were about as popular as computer games today. Space age car factories designed vehicles whose imaginative design was so overwhelming that modern moral and political correctness would never accept anything so hedonistic. Ed Roth began to commercialize his own custom cars, Rat Fink -characters, into this soil and raised his vision by an order of magnitude higher than car companies ever could imagine. And that suited perfectly for teens!

So the early 1960s was a busy time. Youth culture and late childhood as marketing targets had only been discovered a few years earlier, now they were important marketplaces. Music and various crazes from TV shows to chopper bikes offered endless opportunities to spend the hard earned cash. Rebellion is built into teenagers, and Roth's unconventional characters or model kits were a great tool to confuse parents or teachers perceptions of good behaviour.

Roth's bubbletop show cars were show stoppers, making scale models with massive sales figures. He commercialized his ideas into t-shirts, stickers, and various cheap toys or decorations, and as a capable produder, Roth was able to hire skilled professionals to realize those crazy ideas. Robert Williams and Ed Newton drew monsters and cars with unprecedented power and style, most often signed by ”Roth”. On the other hand, the original idea of customization, to create something unique, was somewhat diluted, as Roth's custom characters became almost mainstream for a short period of time!

Roth was the father of custom culture not just with his strange characters and vehicles. Kustom Kulture is characterized by commercialization and the recycling or customization of ideas, which was also Roth's path to success. After all, he was a regular star at shows, showing off his strange cars and painting t-shirts on the spot. A similar show spirit is typical of today's custom culture artists.

The Laguna Art Museum's Kustom Kulture exhibition thus featured automotive artists and lowbrow artists. Today, we see a tremendous range of arts and crafts in the field of Kustom Kulture. Tattoos, vintage skateboarding, tiki characters, choppers, pin-up dressing, garage punk, patina, fake patina, jump blues, even burlesque. Much of these would have been left to their own worth in the early '90s retro-lowbrow flair, they weren't part of the custom vehicle culture of the' 50s and '60s! Today, in the world of Kustom Kulture, ladies and gentlemen of the 40’s pass in harmony with the skaters of the 80’s.
